About Our
Schools
Wilmington has long recognized the
importance of education and offers our residents excellent academic
choices. We have one public school system, New Hanover County Schools, which
serves students living both inside and outside the city limits. In addition to
the public and private schools and the opportunities for pre-school and child
care described below, Wilmington also is home to Cape Fear Community College
and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

New Hanover High School |

New Hanover High
School
|
New Hanover High School is
our oldest high school and the alma mater of many of Wilmington's leaders.
Built in 1920, it has enjoyed an excellent reputation through many years of
growth and change. Currently the smallest of the high schools (1600 students),
it offers a rich curriculum. New Hanover is especially proud of its Lyceum
Academy, literally a school-within-a-school for 200 Juniors and Seniors. These
students spend the first four hours of each day within Lyceum where they study
Advanced Placement or Honors literature, history, science and math in an
integrated curriculum. New Hanover serves the students in the southwest portion
of New Hanover County (Historic District, Forest Hills/South Oleander, Historic
Overlay, and neighborhoods between Eastwood Road and Oleander Drive). New

(Wrightsville Beach and the areas south of Eastwood Road and north of Whiskey
Creek). These are areas that have recently experienced rapid growth, and
consequently Hoggard was somewhat over-crowded until the opening of Ashley High
School in August 2001. Hoggard offers Advanced Placement classes in
language/composition/literature, calculus, biology, chemistry, physics,
European history and American history. John T. Hoggard High

Road and both east and west of Market Street); currently this includes the
Figure 8 Island, Landfall and Porters Neck neighborhoods. Until Ashley High

Minnie Evans Art
Center
|
Ashley High School, new in
August 2001, serves the southern part of New Hanover County and is named for
Sgt. Eugene Ashley, who received the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. The
current enrollment is just under 1500 students, and the class of 2003 will be
the first graduating class. A special feature for Ashley (and the new Murray
Middle School) is the Minnie Evans Arts Center. Named for Minnie Evans, a
Wilmingtonian and one of the foremost black artists of the 20th century, the
Arts Center connects the Middle and High Schools, and it offers performing arts
spaces for both schools. Its 1,000-seat auditorium is the largest in the
county, and classrooms for art, drama, band and chorus are located on each side
of this auditorium. Ashley High School 555 Veterans Drive

Child Care |
|
Childcare is an
increasing concern and, consequently, a business opportunity in the area.
The phone book is flooded with possibilities, including church-affiliated
day-care centers, preschool development centers and after-school care, making
the choices somewhat bewildering for parents
The Child Advocacy
Commission, 1401 S. 39th Street, Wilmington, (910) 791-1057, maintains a
detailed data bank of child-care resources in the area. This organization does

Selling Your Home >Dress For Success
Looking good is important when you want to make a great impression, whether for a job interview or a social function. The same is true of a home that is on the market. When the "For Sale" sign goes up in front of your home, it should be "dressed" for the occasion.
Since the first impression will be of the front of the house, a well-groomed exterior is crucial, from the landscaping to the paint. The interior of your home should be clean and tastefully decorated. Take care of any minor cosmetic repairs that are needed, such as cracked plaster or peeling paint. A sparkling kitchen and shiny bathrooms, clean windows, and the absence of clutter will help your home "show well". Keeping your home looking good at all times is hard work, especially if you have children and are packing for a move. However, the dividends are impressive, because a home that looks well cared for has an excellent chance of selling quickly and for the best price.
